Random thoughts

Every blogger needs a random thoughts post every once in a while. So now it’s my turn for some serious randomness. πŸ™‚

I start back to school next week, I am not in the school mode yet! Summer has been so nice for us, and I guess I am not dealing with the reality that it will soon be over.

But on the other hand I am accepting it, and have been so busy this week running around trying to get everything done. You would think I was preparing for nuclear war or a hurricane. I feel like I need to have gobs of toilet paper, soap, shampoo, conditioner, detergent etc. on hand so I never need to shop again! I tend to forget that I can still shop for these things during the school year. πŸ™‚ I get this way before school starts every year. I also think I need to have the house in order, cleaned, and plenty of food and “supplies” for the house so I don’t have to deal with it during school. Or, if war does break out, I will be prepared. πŸ™‚

This will be my 2nd year at this job, and my 2nd year working full-time again ( I was a SAHM for 5 years and taught part time for 4 years). I still struggle with working full time every day……..yet when it comes down to it, I do feel that God has me in this job and I see so many opportunities to honor Him with my job and interactions with students. Drums and I both teach at our local public high school, and as much as I personally did not want to go back and teach at our local high school ( I had taught there 10 years ago), I now see God’s wisdom in it. It really is the perfect job for me, of course I see that now, and of course I fought it and didn’t see that last year! I remember saying, “this must be God’s will, cause it makes no sense to me to switch jobs.” And now I so clearly see God’s wisdom in the whole job move……funny how that happens isn’t it? It comes down to trusting God even when it doesn’t make sense to us. I know I often blow it in those situations.

More randomness……..I went kayaking the other day for the first time! SportTman and I went out on a local river, we rented “sit on top” kayaks for 2 hours. We both LOVED it! What a fun thing, I have read about how much Faith enjoys kayaking before and have seen others do it. So I wanted to try it before summer was over. SportTman and I had a blast, the river was choppy that day and at first we were nervous. But since it was choppy it actually made it more fun, we felt like we were, as my son would say, “getting some air” when we went over a wave!

Do you like the pic of me getting some air? πŸ™‚

Oh and did I mention, that after 20 years of wearing glasses, I got contacts! The Inventor got them last winter, and when I watched her put the contacts in and saw how easy it is, I thought, what am I waiting for??? πŸ™‚ So I feel so hip and cool, now that I can wear sunglasses…….compared to the stylin clip-on glasses I have been wearing for years! Do you like my Wal-Mart $9.89 glasses? πŸ™‚ Nothing but the finest eye ware for me.

Also, I feel a bit guilty about not being a good blogging buddy lately. I just haven’t been reading your blogs as much as I like to. Too busy preparing for war I guess. I do enjoy reading so many of your blogs, and seeing how God works in your lives. Hopefully this will be a better weekend for that. πŸ™‚

Sometimes it’s just the simple things in life

One of our favorite things to do this summer was to make pancakes on the griddle on the side of our grill. They always tasted better when I made them this way. πŸ™‚

I was thinking today how much we all enjoyed this, and it is such a simple thing.

Making pancakes and bacon, on our deck and enjoying the leisurely breakfast together. It really didn’t cost a lot, and it’s nothing fancy, trendy, or wild….it’s simple.

It reminds of this scripture

I Timothy 5:6-7

But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we bought nothing into the world, and we take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.

Simple is good, the trappings of popular, trendy, fancy things of this world do not always bring contentment. I love finding contentment in the small and simple things…..like breakfast on the deck with my family!

An interview with Sandy

Hello All, this is Sandy’s blog Jesus and Dark Chocolate AKA JaDC, I have taken over the blog and am writing this. She has not signed onto her blog in almost a week, I was worried and made an emergency contact with her to see where she has been! With her permission I am publishing our talk.

JaDC – Sandy where the heck have you been, it’s been almost a week since you posted. Is it me, did I say something wrong?

Sandy – Of course it’s not YOU JaDC! I have just been so busy this past week. My mom had knee replacement surgery, then my dad was in a car accident ( he is fine). As a result of both of these events, I went to their house and help out on Tues, Thurs, and Friday last week. On Wed. I had a teacher in-service ALL day. I hadn’t planned on being at my parents so long. My week was thrown off course…….. and so was I. πŸ™‚ But as I told my parents, if they are going to have major surgery, or get in a car accident, summer is the time to do it. I am home and am more available to help out.

JaDC- You must have been a bit overwhelmed with all that going on, and didn’t you just get home from the beach?

Sandy – Yes it was a lot, and there was a large mountain of wash still sitting on my laundry room floor from the beach. Yesterday, I spent the day cleaning the house (very needed!) and grocery shopping and going to Costco. The house had the markings of a wild party being thrown while I was gone……however, I have now come to realize, it was not a wild party……just normal living for a 13 year old boy and 2 friends who slept over while I was gone.

JaDC – So how does this week look for you?

Sandy – Hopefully better! My mom and dad seem to be doing better. And I am planning a bike trip with my son to Philadelphia for the day on Tues. or Wed. But aside from that, I will be getting ready for school.

JaDC- School……..when do you start. I see lots of other blogs saying they have already started.

Sandy – We don’t start until after Labor Day. I like starting then. So this will be my last week before school starts. So I need to get all ortho and Dr. appointments in, clean the house well, and have my annual mammogram done on Friday. That is such a great way to end the summer…..NOT!!

JaDC – Are you looking forward to going back to school?

Sandy – To be honest, NO! It has really been a perfect summer, and I hate to see it end!

JaDC – What do you mean “perfect summer?”

Sandy – The last 2 summers have been crazy, lots of guests, hubby went to Bulgaria on a mission trip, my mom had a brain aneurysm burst and was in the hospital for a month, we finished our basement, lots of sports etc…….

This summer was finally much calmer and more pleasant! We took several relaxing day trips, we watched lots of movies, ate dinner and played cards on the deck, ate lots of ice cream, and just enjoyed relaxing more and savoring some down time. We had a wonderful time at the beach together, and I just selfishly hate to see it all end. πŸ™‚

JaDC – So the next big question that I am sure is on everyone’s mind is……will you be blogging more this week?

Sandy – Yes I am sure this has been on “everyone’s mind” ( LOL!!!) But I do hope to be back in some kind of routine this week and spend time catching up on all the wonderful blogs I enjoy reading, and writing more on my blog! So thanks JaDC for tracking me down and setting up this interview. And be assured I will be visiting with you much more this week.

JaDC – Thanks Sandy……I missed you….sniff….sniff

Sandy – Oh JaDC you are just so sweet! πŸ™‚

We are back!!

V-A-C-A-T-I-O-N!! What a great word!

We are back from a 5 day stay in Bethany Beach, Delaware! We are so blessed that we can stay at my sister-in-laws, dad’s trailer. It works so well for our family, with 2 bedrooms, a kitchen, and 2 bathrooms, it’s hard to go wrong. It’s about 3.9 miles from the beach. Yes, we are they type who measure these things!

Anyway, we had such a nice family time! We purposely don’t let the kids bring friends on vacations, this way they are stuck hanging out with each other, and mom and dad. πŸ™‚ Tricky aren’t we??!!! So we make the most of our time and do lots together! We all rode in the waves together at the ocean, rammed each other with bumper cars on the boardwalk, ate too much junk food, played arcade games, watched this movie, which we all liked, and we played football on the beach together one night, while the moon was out.

Thought you might like to see a few pictures.

I love The Inventor’s facial expression on this picture!

All of us enjoying a night on the boardwalk.

SportTman riding in a wave!

We went out on a pier, overlooking Ocean City, Md.

Just a shovel and sand, and The Inventor was a happy girl!

This is a bit scary I know, but, yes that is me riding in a wave!!

Things to do when stuck in a traffic jam

We had the pleasure of being stuck in a traffic jam for a whopping 3.5 hours recently!! It was due to a fatal accident on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. So in case you are stuck in a MAJOR traffic mess for endless hours in the middle of the summer. I thought I would offer you some tips……so as a super mom you will be prepared!

#1 – Play endless games of the infamous alphabet game….you know the one….where you find letters on signs, trucks, or on the back of the same car you have been following forever!

#2 – Listen to LOTS of music, and roll down the windows for all to hear your rockin christian music. Pretend you are a teenager again. Although your image will be tainted if you are driving a van like ours!

#3- As a mom it is important to demonstrate your physical strength and agility in such a dire situation. So climb over all the things you have packed, including your kids, and attempt to retrieve food from the back of the van. It is important to show your flexibility and stick your head way down over the back bench seat with your butt sticking way up. Sigh a lot so others will know how difficult this is, and then continue to stretch your arm down as far a possible to retrieve that must have food item. In our case, I was after the Oreo Cakesters, which I finally victoriously snatched from the depths of my van. They were ALL quickly devoured!

#4- Write a sign that says, “Honk if you have to pee!!” This provides endless hours of fun! BTW, LOTS of people honked their horns! πŸ™‚ Sorry you can’t read the sign that well, I had to take a quick picture! I don’t have much experience taking pictures while stuck in traffic on a major highway! πŸ™‚

Those are just a few of our tips! Hope it never happens to you! But if it does, you have the same choice we did….be miserable or make the best of it! πŸ™‚

I need to see a doctor….

Something is wrong with me. I am not sure what is going on. Drums brought me this delicious chocolate bar about 2 WEEKS ago and I STILL have it!!!! This never happens. What kind of girl has yummy, scrumptious chocolate in her house, un-touched after 2 weeks! I am worried, I have a chocolate image to keep up. Jesus and Ice Cream or Jesus and Watermelon just don’t have the same feel as Jesus and Dark Chocolate.

Ice Cream and watermelon is what I have been craving this summer, but no chocolate. What should I do, I am starting to panic.

Watching TV

It’s summer…so how much TV do you let your kids watch????

I have never been a big TV watcher, and neither have my kids. They are outdoor kids, generally speaking, but lately it seems that they have been watching more TV. When they don’t know what to do they automatically want to zone out and watch TV. They are 11 and 13 and only recently discovered The Disney Channel, they both like to watch The Suite Life of Zach and Cody. This is really the first actual sitcom show that they have been in to. Previous TV watching consisted of sports, Discovery Channel, History Channel, and shows like Myth Busters, Dirty Jobs and Cash Cab. I made a rule and said one hour per day is all they could watch, but then there are days where I think it’s good for them to just chill and watch some TV, especially since they are so active. I just don’t know………so let me hear it, what are your thoughts? How much is too much TV? I also realize it’s also important to monitor what they watch, so what do you think about The Disney Channel and other networks geared towards kids?Β Β  All thoughts are good thoughts, so bring it on ladies. πŸ™‚Β  I really want to hear what you think!!
